Methodology Module: Blog #1

For this module I focused on the topic of Movie Barcodes, asking the question: What can we learn from a film by viewing it as a barcode-style image? Furthermore, how have film production techniques, styles, etc. transformed, and how may those changes be revealed in movie barcodes? The digital tools I used included Movie Barcode Generator made by UMW Prof Zach Whalen & online databases, like moviebarcode.tumblr.com that store movie barcodes made by various creators.

So, what CAN we learn from a film by viewing it as a barcode-style image?

  • Recognize a greater color contrast over time in animated movies.
  • Compare and contrast directorial characteristics.
  • Useful in identifying/studying the colors, hues, and style of a movie all at once.
  • The main potential of movie barcodes is not just for aesthetic/art purposes, but they are also used to study methods of video re-enhancement and color correction.

Here is a slideshow I made to present my findings. Thanks!
